Abstract
Das österreichische Bundesgesetz, welches das Institute for Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria) begründete wurde am 19. Mai 2006 verabschiedet und sieht vor, dass das Institut alle vier Jahre evaluiert werden soll. Der größte Teil des Berichts konzentriert sich auf prozessuale Fragen und nicht auf die wissenschaftliche Evaluierung der Fakultät, weil die Zeit seit dem Beginn der Tätigkeit zu kurz war. Die internationale Gutachtergruppe wurde mit der Beantwortung der folgenden Frage beauftragt - ist IST auf dem Weg sein Hauptziel zu erreichen eine führende Forschungseinrichtung mit internationalem Ruf zu werden? Diese Frage lässt sich mit einem einfachen "Ja" beantworten. Der Entwicklungspfad aller Teilbereiche dieser Institution ist auf dem Weg in Richtung einer klaren Exzellenzorganisation, die sich einen Namen in der Welt machen wird, mit der notwendigen Bedingung weiterer staatlicher Unterstützung. Die Etablierung von IST Austria, ursprünglich ins Auge gefasst von Anton Zeilinger, hat eine einzigartige Organisation nach Wien gebracht, welche die die bereits existierenden Lehr- und Forschungseinrichtungen ergänzt. Das IST ist eine große Bereicherung für die österreichische Bildung und Wissenschaft, weil sie den einzigartigen Fokus der Graduiertenausbildung im Rahmen der außerordentlichen Forschungsaktivitäten verfolgt.
Abstract (english)
The Austrian Federal Law passed on May 19, 2006, which established the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (IST Austria), mandates that the Institute be reviewed every four years. Much of the report focuses on procedural issues rather than on scientific evaluation of the faculty because the time since the start of operations is too short to evaluate much work actually accomplished at IST. The international review panel was tasked with answering the question – is IST on its way to achieving its main goal to become a leading research institution with an international reputation? This question can be answered with a simple “Yes”. The trajectory of development of all of the elements of this institution is toward making an organization of clear excellence that will be recognized throughout the world, but continued governmental support is a necessary condition. The creation of IST Austria, originally envisaged by Anton Zeilinger, has brought to Vienna a unique organization that complements the teaching and research organizations that already exist there. It is a great addition to Austrian education and science because it has the unique focus of providing graduate education in the context of extraordinary research activities.
